About 230 km (140 mi) southwest of Aswan near the border with Sudan the complex of Abu Simbel will be reached, which was dedicated to the gods Amun, Ra-Horakhty, and Ptah, as well as to the deified Ramesses himself. It is generally considered the grandest and most beautiful of the temples commissioned during the reign of Ramesses II, and originally carved out of the rock cliff by order of Pharaoh Ramesses II in the 13th century BC. The temple is dedicated to Ramesses II and his wife Nefertari, and it is one of the most impressive and well-preserved temples in Egypt.
